I started crafting at a very young age, my first true prop being a wooden sword that I carved and painted at age 11. From there, I continued crafting things for cosplays; costumes to be worn for fun usually at a convention. With no access to professionals and too young to know how to search up tutorials, I stumbled my way through years of experimentation with different methods and materials ranging from foam, wood, plastic, cloth, and cardboard. More often than not, the first trials of a new venture results in a sub-par product, but I take failures as lessons and use it to do better the next time around. When creating a prop that needs to do a special function, I look to items that surround me in everyday life. The Vi gauntlets are an example of how simple puppetry can be turned into a articulated hulking glove. I use the idea of "simple machines" like wedges and pivot points to incorporate into my props. We'll find a way! |
